Jon
heads to the fourth round of the Formula 3 Euroseries, hoping that last
year’s performances in Eurocup Formula Renault, will be repeated in 2008,
where the Leeds-resident teenager will once again take on the best in
Europe, on the Norisring circuit in Nuremberg this coming weekend.
As reported elsewhere during the 2007 season, the Multiflight-backed driver
competed in the Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 Championship. So far this year,
Jon’s results have largely mirrored that successful first year, which took
him to that superb second place in the championship, in what had been only
his first year in car racing.
Just like he did last year in the Formula Renault, Jon secured his first
Euro Formula 3 podium in the third rounds of the 2008 series, just a few
weeks ago. Last year the talented British ace had delighted his ‘home’ crowd
at Donington Park, when he took his first win in the ultra-competitive
Formula Renault series.
Over the remaining 2007 Formula Renault races, Jon was the only driver to
mount a serious challenge to eventual champion Brendon Hartley. After his
breakthrough victory though, Jon went on to record further victories in the
final four rounds, one more than the champion Hartley, to give him the
runner-up spot in the title chase.
For 2008, the 19 year-old BRDC Superstar provided ample demonstration of his
talent, with a masterful display in the atrocious weather conditions at the
last race in Pau, France, when he took a sensational third place at the
chequered flag. With that success, and with the knowledge of what happened
12-months ago, Jon will be hoping for his maiden victory in Formula 3 to set
him on a similar path.
“We had a great first season in car racing last year, taking it nice and
steady at the start, and progressing over the course of the first few
races," Jon said this week. “We took the runner-up spot at the third round
of the series in Hungary and then went one better at Donington in the next
round.
“I’m certainly hoping we can continue the trend this season, as it would be
great to get my first win nice and early. I’d really rather not have to wait
for my only home race this season, which isn’t until the end of August at
Brands Hatch!
“Seriously though, it’s a tough, competitive championship this season, which
has resulted in five different drivers winning the first six races. That’s
great as it means the championship is still wide open after three rounds,
with seven rounds still remaining.”
Jon’s weekend in Germany will start with testing at the circuit this Friday,
before he settles down for official qualifying, followed by the first race
on Saturday. The second race will take place at 10.55am on Sunday morning,
and will be shown live on Motors TV at 9.45am (UK time), after a replay of
Saturday’s opening round.
