With his second consecutive victory yesterday, Jon made it three wins from three starts today, with another stunning performance in
Estoril.
As Jon had pointed out yesterday, “the weekend has gone well right from the first test session. We knew I had the potential to win races, but I had to turn that potential into results. Qualifying went really well and that put me in an ideal position to win. From an outsider’s point of view, it might have looked like I had an easy race, but with two really quick guys not too far behind me, that wasn’t the case at all…”
Race two today though was a straight-forward replay of yesterday, with Jon making an impeccable start from pole position. He led into the first corner and wasted no time in putting some clear space between himself and his nearest pursuer. From that point onwards Jon remained in total control, adding to his points tally with an extra point for yet another fastest race lap.
After six laps, Jon was already two and a half seconds clear of his rivals, as he worked his way towards the chequered flag, to secure second place in the Eurocup Championship behind Brendan Hartley, who did just enough to take the title behind Jon with a podium finish.
"Two pole positions,” Jon said afterwards, as the media pack closed in for his thoughts, “two race wins, and the fastest lap in both races. I couldn't have dreamed of a better weekend. It's fantastic, as this is only my first season in single-seater racing”.
With just two races remaining in Spain next week at the Barcelona track, the current point’s positions are as follows:
1 Hartley 119
2 Jon 71
3 Pic 68
4 Kechele 60
5 Coletti 58
6 Waldschmidt 52
7 Turvey 50
and the rest…
“I hope I can hold onto my second place in the Eurocup in Barcelona,” Jon commented before flying back to the UK. And on current form, it would need a very brave person to bet not only on Jon doing just that, but betting that someone other than the SG Formula driver will be at the top of the podium in both of the final races.
